We all love the idea of adding extra kick and speed to our “whips”, but how can we do it? One way to achieve better lift-off is to add a Supercharger or Turbocharger. But, how do you know which one to get? Lets get some facts out of the way:
First, Turbochargers are a type of Supercharger, which uses a forced induction method to increase the flow of oxygen, resulting in better combustion in an engine. The addition of a Super or Turbocharger can benefit the driver with 20-30% more horsepower.
Superchargers use a compressor powered directly by the engine itself, allowing for instantaneous pressure added to the engine. Turbochargers use compressors powered by the exhaust from the engine, which allows for better efficiency, but results in lag time. For this reason, dragsters and other car enthusiasts who desire instantaneous response typically go for the Supercharger approach. However, car enthusiasts looking to maximize performance capabilities in the long term typically choose the more efficient, yet laggy Turbocharger.
