General Motors Europe announced today that Swedish supercar maker, Koenigsegg, will purchase Saab around September 2009. GM will continue to supply Saab with platforms and powertrains for an undisclosed amount of time, though probably at least for the next 5-6 years, if not longer. The new 9-5 which will be built in Trollhättan, Sweden is launching later this year followed by the 9-4X crossover. Both of these will probably complete their lifecycle on current platforms. The same is likely true for the 9-1 which may launch in 2010 or 2011. The big question mark will be the next generation 9-3, which had been expected to move to GM’s Delta II platform.
Autoblog got some great shots of the Saab Aero X concept car of 2006 next to the Koenigsegg CCX. While it’s way too early to tell if Saab’s new ownership situation will help get the automaker out of the woods it has seemingly been lost in for years, you can’t help but at least get a little excited when seeing these two together.
